How to Properly Clean a Pool Cartridge Filter and How Often

Your pool’s cartridge filter is one of the most important components in maintaining crystal-clear water. When it’s clean and functioning properly, it traps dirt, oils, sunscreen, and other debris that can cloud the water or clog your system. But like anything else, it needs routine maintenance.
At Founder’s Pool Service, we often get asked, “How often should I clean my pool filter?” and “What’s the best way to do it?” Here's our expert guide.
How Often Should You Clean Your Pool’s Cartridge Filter?
As a general rule, cartridge filters should be thoroughly cleaned every 6 months. However, if your pool gets heavy use, has a lot of trees nearby, or is prone to algae blooms, you may need to clean it more frequently — even every 2 to 3 months.
Signs it’s time to clean your cartridge filter:
- The PSI on your filter gauge is 8–10 points higher than normal
- Water flow from the returns is reduced
- Water looks cloudy or the pool isn’t staying clean as easily
- Your pump is straining or making unusual noises
Step-by-Step Guide to Cleaning a Pool Cartridge Filter
Step 1: Turn Off the Pump and Power
Safety first. Turn off the pool pump and any automation systems to prevent the pump from turning on during the cleaning process.
Step 2: Release Air and Drain the Filter
Use the air relief valve to release pressure from the filter tank. Then open the drain plug to let water escape.
Step 3: Open the Filter Tank
Loosen and remove the clamp or bolts (depending on your filter model) to access the inside of the tank.
Step 4: Remove the Cartridge(s)
Carefully remove the cartridge elements and inspect for damage like cracked bands or fraying pleats.
Step 5: Rinse with a Hose
Use a garden hose with a spray nozzle to clean between the pleats. Spray at an angle and work from top to bottom. Do not use a pressure washer — it can damage the cartridge material.
Optional: Soak for Deep Cleaning
If the cartridges are especially dirty or oily, soak them overnight in a 1:10 solution of pool filter cleaner and water (or use a degreaser or muriatic acid solution if needed — one at a time, never mixed). Then rinse thoroughly.
Step 6: Reassemble the Filter
Reinsert the cartridges, check the O-rings for cracks or dryness, and apply a silicone-based lubricant if needed. Secure the tank and close the drain plug. Read the instructions specific to your filter system to ensure it is reassembled properly, as improperly assembled filters can cause a safety hazard.
Step 7: Restart the System
Turn the power back on, run the pump, and release any remaining air using the relief valve until a steady stream of water comes out.
