DE Pool Filters: Pros, Cons & How to Maintain Them

If you're considering a DE (Diatomaceous Earth) filter or already own one, you’ve likely heard they provide “the clearest water possible.” But how do they really compare to cartridge and sand filters? And more importantly — how do you take care of one properly?

At Founder’s Pool Service, we work on all filter types across Buckeye, Goodyear, Litchfield Park, Paradise Valley, and North Scottsdale. Here’s what you need to know about DE filters.

✅ What Is a DE Filter?

A DE filter uses grids coated in a fine powder made from crushed fossilized diatoms. This powder traps microscopic debris — down to 2–5 microns — making DE filters the most precise of the three main filter types (sand, cartridge, and DE).

👍 Pros of DE Filters

  • Best Water Clarity
DE filters trap the smallest particles, giving your water that crystal-clear sparkle.
  • Efficient Filtration
Especially helpful after storms or heavy swimmer loads — DE filters clean up fast.
  • Good for Large or High-Demand Pools
Ideal for backyard pools with high bather loads, trees nearby, or lots of fine desert dust.

👎 Cons of DE Filters

  • More Complex Maintenance
Backwashing, recharging DE powder, and occasional grid teardown require extra effort or a professional.
  • Requires DE Powder
You must add new powder every time you backwash, and it must be handled carefully (always wear a mask).
  • Can’t Drain to Sewer in Some Cities
Some Arizona municipalities restrict backwashing DE powder into storm drains due to environmental concerns.
  • More Expensive Upfront
DE filters tend to cost more than sand or cartridge filters and may need grid replacements over time.

🧽 How to Maintain a DE Filter (Properly)

  1. Backwash when the pressure rises 8–10 PSI above normal.
Most DE filters need a backwash every 4–6 weeks in summer, depending on debris and usage.
  2. Recharge the DE powder after each backwash.
Always follow your manufacturer’s specs (typically 1 lb of DE powder per 10 sq. ft. of filter area).
  3. Tear down and clean grids every 6 months.
This involves disassembling the tank, hosing off the grids, inspecting for damage, and reassembling.
  4. Replace damaged or worn grids as needed.
A cracked grid can lead to DE powder shooting back into the pool — cloudy water is a red flag.
  5. Use a pool professional (like Founder’s 😉) for full cleanings.
We clean, recharge, and inspect DE filters as part of our Silver, Gold, and Platinum service plans.

🛠️ Is a DE Filter Right for You?

If your priority is water clarity, a DE filter is a great investment — but it does come with maintenance responsibilities. If you’d rather leave that to the pros, we’ve got you covered.
