Frequently Asked Questions
What is the advantage of having pool service twice per week?
Having your pool serviced twice per week ensures that the proper chemical levels are maintained without having to use chlorine tablets. Chlorine tablets contain about 45-50% chlorine and 50-55% cyanuric acid (CYA). CYA is a good thing when maintained between30-50ppm as it helps prevent UV rays from degrading the chlorine. However, a pound of 3" trichlor tablets raises the CYA level by 6-6.5ppm. When CYA levels are above the 30-50ppm range, you must increase the amount of chlorine added to the pool to ensure proper sanitation, oxidation, and disinfection.
What if I have a salt water chlorine generator on my pool?
Salt water chlorine generators add chlorine to the pool when the pump is running at proper flow rates. However, they are not producing chlorine when the pump is off or running at too low of a flow rate for the generator to function properly. Therefore, you must still ensure that the residual chlorine levels in the pool are high enough to prevent bacteria, viruses, and algae from growing and creating an unsafe condition for bathers.
Is twice a week service recommended with a salt water chlorine generator?
Yes, salt water chlorine generators require twice per week service because of the chemical byproducts created during the chlorine generation process and requires an adjustment to the chemistry for proper stability.
When a salt water chlorine generator is running, it uses electrolysis to split salt (sodium chloride, NaCl) into chlorine. The key reaction at the cell plates produce:
- Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) — this is the chlorine sanitizer
- Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) — this is a high-pH substance (a strong base)
Sodium hydroxide raises the water’s pH over time, especially in pools with lower usage or poor circulation.
Why pH Continues to Creep Up
- Ongoing generation of sodium hydroxide accumulates
- CO₂ loss from the water (especially in well-circulated or aerated pools) also contributes to rising pH
- Salt cells typically run daily, so this is a gradual, compounding effect
What is an automatic pool cleaner and why is it required?
An automatic pool cleaner is any type of cleaner that runs each time your pump is running. These typically are either the suction or pressure types. In-floor pop up cleaners are another type that are commonly installed. These automatic cleaners constantly move around the pool to stir up or vacuum up dirt, debris, and leaves from steps and the pool bottom. They are required for our standard packages because a pool must be manually vacuumed on a weekly basis if you do not have one on your pool. If you cannot add one to your pool, or if you do not want one, we can still service your pool for an additional charge.
My current or prior pool cleaning company charged extra to clean my cartridge filters every six months. Do your standard packages include these cleanings?
Yes, we believe in keeping things simple. That's why our Silver, Gold, and Platinum packages include a free cartridge filter cleaning after every six months of continued service.
What is included with your Silver, Gold and Platinum packages?
Silver package: Pool walls, steps, and loveseats will be brushed and the surface will be skimmed each visit. Pool chemicals will be tested and adjusted as needed each visit. Regular chemicals are included in the subscription price (chlorine, acid, sodium bicarbonate, boric acid, and soda ash). Sand and DE filters will be backwashed as needed. O-rings will be lubricated and cleaned as needed. Salt cells will be checked and cleaned as needed. Automatic vacuum cleaners will be inspected as necessary. Pool and pool equipment will be inspected each visit. Filter baskets and skimmer baskets will be emptied each visit.
Cartridge filters will be cleaned after every six months of continuous subscription service.
Gold package: Includes everything in the Silver package plus a second visit to your pool each week to test and balance chemicals. This allows us to maintain safe chemical levels without the use of chlorine tablets.
Platinum package: Includes everything in the Silver package but your pool will be fully serviced twice per week. This is a great option for homeowners who want their pool to always be clean and ready to use.
What sets Founder's Pool Service, LLC apart from the competition?
We believe in being transparent and honest with our customers. That said, we believe that educating customers on the negative impacts of once per week pool cleaning services is important, so pool owners can make informed decisions about their pool maintenance. We also believe in being responsible stewards of our limited water resources here in the desert, which compels us to inform customers of the need to drain their pools regularly due to chlorine tablet use. We believe that fully informed and educated pool owners will understand why having their pool serviced twice per week is important. We are also one of a few pool cleaning companies that even offer twice per week service.

Expert New Pool Startup Services
YOU MAY NEED TO KNOW
New Pool Startup FAQs
Why does a new pool need a professional startup?
A professional startup is critical because the water chemistry during the first 30 days directly affects the longevity and appearance of your pool's surface. Improper startup can lead to etching, scaling, discoloration, or permanent damage to plaster and pebble finishes.
What are the National Plasterers Council (NPC) startup procedures?
The NPC startup procedures are industry standards developed to ensure the best possible curing conditions for new pool interiors. They include guidelines for water filling, chemical balancing, brushing schedules, and equipment operation to protect against surface damage.
What happens if the startup process isn’t done correctly?
Improper startup can cause surface roughness, streaking, blotching, or calcium scaling. These issues are often irreversible and may void any warranties provided by the plaster company or pool builder.
Can I do the startup myself?
It’s not recommended. Water chemistry must be adjusted multiple times per day during the first week, and even a small mistake can result in long-term surface damage. Certified technicians follow precise NPC protocols using professional-grade testing equipment.
How long does the startup process take?
The initial startup process typically lasts 7–10 days, but the pool requires close monitoring for the first 30 days. This includes frequent brushing, chemical testing, and adjustments to support proper curing.
What’s included in Founder's Pool Service’s professional startup?
Our certified technicians manage the entire startup process from the first water fill to ongoing chemical balancing and surface brushing. We follow NPC guidelines step by step to protect your new plaster or pebble finish.
Do you document the startup process for warranty purposes?
Yes. We maintain detailed records of water chemistry, brushing, and treatment logs to support any future warranty claims or builder requirements. Our documentation is available upon request.
What makes Founder's Pool Service different from other providers?
We’re NPC-certified and trained specifically in Arizona pool conditions. We use precise digital water testing and understand the impact of our local water supply on new surfaces. Your investment is protected with our expert care.
